Culture & Kids Kicks off with Jackie Evancho

Last night we took the kids to see Jackie Evancho, 12 year old child prodigy and singer, at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center. Thus, I successfully met my first new year’s resolution for 2013. Let’s expose the kids to all the amazing culture out there. And, let’s make it culture they can relate to!

My husband has a precious tradition of watching America’s Got Talent with the kids. They cuddle together on the couch mutually entranced by the broad range of talent. Jackie Evancho was a highlight of the experience, especially for then seven year old Hannah, who shed tears when Evancho placed second in the 2010 finals.

Noone could appreciate last night’s sold out performance more than a nine year old whose smile could have burst through the ceiling each time Evancho giggled her appreciation to the audience or did her double handed waive. And, although a little fidgety during the two hour show, my seven year old, who had never seen a live orchestra, was entranced by the musicians and instruments.

So giggles, bounces and double waives aside, culture with kids in January was a success. Evancho’s awe inspiring voice and range was a terrific experience for all. And, yes, it was culture the kids could relate to.

I wonder what February will bring. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

  1. As stepped into the elevator in the parking ramp on our way to Jackie's Minneapolis concert, my wife and I met a mother and her (I'm guessing) 8-year-old daughter. Like yours, this little girl had been a fan since AGT, and this was her first Jackie concert. I told her what you should tell your girls (becasue it's true): Jackie LOVES her fans, but she REALLY LOVES her young fans! They are very special to her.

A fun footnote: I spotted this mom & daughter during the intermission, sitting off to the side in row P. I went to them and led them to two vacant seats in front of us, in row D, dead center. What a pleasure is was to watch this delighted young lady spring to her feet at the ended of almost every song thereafter. Yes, these kids are more than ready for good music!

    1. Craig,
Thanks so much for visiting She She Shoppers and for your sweet story. I am sure you made that little girl's night. A big part of such shows is undergoing the experience through the eyes of a child. Come again soon.

  2. HI
-Someone posted this on Jackie's facebook page and I was so pleasantly surprised to realize that you were the family sitting next to me at the concert! I lent you my binoculars. Jackie is certainly a great role model for young girls. I don't think there are too many in the public eye these days.
I have a 5 year old granddaughter with Down Syndrome (very high functioning)and she loves to watch Jackie sing. I wanted so much to bring her last night but her staying power isn't that long yet. :-)For now, she puts on her "Jackie" dress and gets her toy microphone and sings her heart out.
It was a pleasure meeting you and I will enjoy following She She Shoppers in the future.
